Just hours after announcing the sacking of Giovanni Solinas, Kaizer Chiefs named Ernst Middendorp as their new coach.
The Soweto giants announced on Friday afternoon that they had parted ways with Solinas and assistant Patrick Mabedi, and were quick to announce German coach Middendorp as the Italian’s replacement.
Middendorp is no stranger to the club, having had a spell with them from 2005 to 2017, while he has also been in charge at Maritzburg United, Golden Arrows, Bloemfontein Celtic, Chippa United and Free State Stars.

Speaking on the club’s official website, chairman Kaizer Motaung admitted that Middendorp’s experience and knowledge of the club was a determining factor in his appointment.
‘We were looking for a coach who is experienced and who has an understanding of the club’s footballing culture.
‘That’s certainly the case with Middendorp, who won trophies during his previous stint in charge of Kaizer Chiefs.
‘Middendorp also understands South African football well, having a vast knowledge and experience of our local football. We are looking forward to working together.’
‘We need stability, and the coach will start working with the team on Saturday,’ concluded Motaung.
“We were looking for a coach who is experienced and who has an understanding of the club’s footballing culture,” commented Kaizer Motaung.
The targeted assistant coach will be announced soon. Arthur Zwane will assist Middendorp for the upcoming three games.#HailTheChief pic.twitter.com/FPRM4IIKF7
