Everton put a dent in Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge following their impressive 2-0 victory over the Reds at Goodison Park on Wednesday evening.
Everton won their first Merseyside derby at home since October 2010 thanks to goals from Jarrad Branthwaite in the first half and a tremendous header from Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the second half.
Liverpool knew that a victory over the opponents they have so frequently defeated would tie them for first place with Arsenal, but Jurgen Klopp’s team was never able to bounce back from an early defeat at the hands of Everton, with Branthwaite’s close-range goal a just reward.
Jordan Pickford, the England custodian, then had to make saves against Andy Robertson, Darwin Nunez, and Luis Diaz to keep Everton ahead, but this evening in a very hostile environment, the Toffees were unbeatable.
And shortly before the hour, the ever-present menace Calvert-Lewin emerged at the far post to head home from Dwight McNeil’s corner, effectively sealing the victory.
In his farewell Merseyside derby, Liverpool had lots of possession, but with Pickford playing so well and Everton’s defence being so strong, there was no way back. Klopp had to accept defeat at Goodison Park.
