Erling Haaland bagged a brace as Manchester City cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
As Pep Guardiola’s team took control from the start and rarely looked like giving up, Erling Haaland was the main problem. He scored goals in both halves and set up a third goal for Phil Foden.
Before the game, moving scenes happened as fans from both sides of Manchester’s football divide came together to honour the late Sir Bobby Charlton.
Erik ten Hag, the manager, and his players will never forget the next game.
Rasmus Hojlund was given a penalty for dragging down Rodri after the video assistant referee stepped in, and Haaland scored the penalty to put City ahead after 26 minutes.
Andre Onana, United’s custodian, made a great save on Haaland’s second attempt from a far-post header right before halftime. But the striker didn’t have to wait long to double City’s lead four minutes after the break, thanks to a perfect cross from Bernardo Silva.
Before halftime, City’s custodian Ederson also made a great save on Scott McTominay. But City sealed the deal 10 minutes from time when Haaland set up Foden for the easiest of chances.
Even though they’ve been at the top of the Premier League for a long time, Manchester City hasn’t always looked their best this season. But the defending champions put on a scary show to beat their rivals.
Haaland can’t get enough goals, and United’s custodian Onana did a great job of stopping him twice. They also did a great job of showing the home team’s flaws.
In contrast to United’s aimless play, City were calm, in charge, and passed the ball around with the confidence of a team that knew they were playing against opponents that were not even close to their level.
When Foden scored, the score looked a lot more like it really was, as City had a tight grip on the game the whole time. They didn’t need any more goals, and Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva’s work on the left wing was especially good.
Their quality has only grown since John Stones came back from injury. Their performance showed how hard it would be for anyone to take the title away from them.
When this derby was coming to an end, thousands of empty seats around Old Trafford told the story of a really bad day for Manchester United.
After the tribute to Charlton, the stadium was filled with noise as United fans pushed their team forward, but it was quickly clear that these teams were not of the same level.
United had chances, like when Ederson saved a shot from McTominay and when Marcus Rashford, who was having a bad game, missed a great chance. But Ten Hag’s team lacked ideas, creativity, and urgency, and City was too good for them.
Even though Hojlund gave up a penalty, the young player’s effort was commendable, and Old Trafford let him know how they felt by jeering him when he was taken off late in the game.
When United beat City at Old Trafford in the Premier League last season, it looked like they were making progress. But this was a scary sight for Ten Hag, whose team looked like they were going backwards.
