Erling Haaland bagged a brace as Manchester City opened the Premier League title defence off with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.
Last season, he scored 52 goals as City won the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. It took him only 185 seconds to score his first goal of the new season, giving the newly promoted Clarets a blow from which they never recovered.
Rodri headed Kevin de Bruyne’s cross into the area, where Haaland was waiting. After 36 minutes, Haaland curled a beautiful left-foot shot past Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and into the top corner to end the game.
Burnley never gave up, spurred on by a passionate home crowd, but City’s control grew stronger as the game went on. With 15 minutes left, Rodri scored the third goal after the home defence failed to clear a free kick.
All of it worked out well for City, whose night was only ruined when De Bruyne got hurt again and had to limp off after only 23 minutes. He was replaced by Mateo Kovacic, who joined City in the summer.
Anass Zaroury of Burnley was sent off in extra time after a dangerous lunge on Kyle Walker was reviewed by the VAR.
