India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat against South Africa in their Cricket World Cup pool match in Kolkata on Sunday.

India, the tournament’s unbeaten team, started this heavyweight match at Eden Gardens unchanged after defeating Sri Lanka for just 55 on Thursday in Mumbai. They are aiming for their eighth victory in eight games.

Sunday marked Virat Kohli’s 35th birthday. The star batsman’s ardent supporters will be hoping that on this special day, he can tie Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time one-day international record of 49 hundreds, as he narrowly missed with 88 against Sri Lanka.

India and South Africa, who are presently ranked second and third respectively, have advanced to the round of four and, should they maintain their current rankings, will undoubtedly face off again in the final on November 19 in Ahmedabad.

South Africa has only once lost after suffering an unexpected defeat by the Netherlands, whose spot in the knockout stage was guaranteed by Pakistan’s victory over New Zealand on Saturday.

But, they have appeared more prone to making mistakes when pursuing rather than aiming.

Only left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi replaced paceman Gerald Coetzee in South Africa’s squad that thrashed New Zealand by 190 runs in Pune on Wednesday.
