Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has managed to convince Juventus right back Joel Untersee to play for the South African national team instead of Switzerland.
The 24-year-old is currently on loan at Empoli from Juventus and has made 14 appearances and assisted four goals in the Italian Serie B.
Untersee was born in Benoni but he opted to represent Switzerland at junior level from U15 to U21.
Baxter confirmed that Untersee has now committed himself to playing for Bafana Bafana over representing Switzerland at a senior level.
‘In the winter, I’ve been in Europe twice‚’ Baxter told the media.
‘I’ve secured one extra player for South Africa.
‘A player who plays in Italy‚ who was born in Benoni‚ Joel Untersee‚ who’s committed himself to South Africa instead of Switzerland.
‘He had played U21 for Switzerland‚ and he now wants to turn back to South Africa.’
Over the course of his career, Untersee has managed to score two goals and assist a further 10 from 159 appearances in all competitions playing for the likes of FC Zurich, FC Vaduz, Juventus, Brescia Calcio and Empoli.
