Kevin Anderson faces the man who beat him at Wimbledon, Sam Querrey, for a place in the semi-finals of the US Open after an impressive win in the last 16.

Anderson reached the quarter-finals in New York for the second time in three years with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 victory over Paolo Lorenzi.

Anderson needed 2hr 57min to dispatch the Italian veteran, attacking early and often from the baseline behind 54 winners, including 18 aces.

Anderson is surging towards a top-20 return in the ATP Rankings after notching a trio of straight-set wins to open the tournament, and with a rather straightforward victory over Lorenzi.

‘It feels great,’ said Anderson. ‘Obviously I think getting here in this position a couple years ago, it was a very valuable experience in today’s match. Obviously at this stage of tournaments, it means a lot. I think just being at that stage previously made me settle a little bit.’

Querrey gave the host nation its first male quarterfinalist in New York since 2011 by compiling 55 winners and only eight unforced errors, while easily beating No 23 Mischa Zverev 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.

Maria Sharapova’s first Grand Slam tournament in 19 months ended with defeat by Anastasija Sevastova in the fourth round.

Latvia’s Sevastova, the 16th seed, won 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals. The 27-year-old will play Sloane Stephens in the quarter-finals, after the American beat Julia Goerges.

Sharapova, ranked 146th after returning from a doping ban in April, was given a wildcard into the main draw.

‘It’s been a really great ride in the last week,’ said the 30-year-old.

Sharapova’s exit leaves Venus Williams as the only past US Open champion in the women’s field. The 37-year-old Williams, who won the title in 2000 and 2001, got to the quarter-finals by beating Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Next for Williams will be a showdown against No 13 Petra Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon winner, who eliminated reigning Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

Earlier on Sunday, 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov’s entertaining stay ended with a 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3) loss to 12th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain. In the quarters, Carreno Busta will play No 29 Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.

Shapovalov was trying to become the youngest male quarter-finalist at Flushing Meadows since Andre Agassi in 1988, but he wasted a 5-2 lead and three set points in the opener, and finished with 55 unforced errors.
