Liverpool have reportedly won the race to sign Dutch star Cody Gakpo after PSV Eindhoven announced an agreement with the Reds.

Liverpool’s arch-rivals Manchester United had been mentioned as a potential destination for Gakpo, who scored three goals for the Netherlands at the World Cup.

“PSV and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo,” PSV said in a statement.

“The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer.”

The Dutch club’s general manager, Marcel Brands, said that the transfer fee would be a club record.

Reports say that the fee could go up to 50 million euros ($53 million or £44 million).

After getting Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez in the last year, Liverpool’s front line is getting even better with the addition of Gakpo.

After a bad start to the season, the Reds are sixth in the Premier League. They are five points behind the top four teams that qualify for the Champions League.

But Jurgen Klopp’s team won their third straight league game by beating Aston Villa 3-1 on Monday, when the Premier League got back to work after the World Cup.
