Manchester United came from a goal down to secure a dramatic 2-1 win over rivals Manchester City, while Liverpool’s struggles continued following their shock 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Saturday.
United trailed in the second Manchester derby of the season due to Jack Grealish’s 60th minute header at Old Trafford with just 12 minutes remaining.
But City’s title defense took a significant hit when Portugal midfielder Fernandes equalized in a highly questionable manner and United’s Marcus Rashford scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute.
The goal by Fernandes proved decisive, and City manager Pep Guardiola and his players were furious when Rashford was ruled offside after receiving Casemiro’s pass.
Although VAR determined that Rashford did not touch the ball or interfere with play because he did not touch the ball, City was adamant that the England forward distracted the defenders and goalkeeper Ederson.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s chances of finishing in the top four after a tough season took a big hit when Brighton swept to victory on the south coast.
After controlling the first half without scoring, Brighton took the lead when they deserved to.
Joel Matip gave the ball to Alexis Mac Allister carelessly, and he passed it to Kaoru Mitoma, whose cross was just right for Solly March, who was unmarked.
Liverpool was in a mess, and six minutes later, March scored a great goal from just inside the area. The ball went into the far corner.
Danny Welbeck finished off the win by deflecting March’s pass over Joe Gomez and volleying it into the goal.
