Manchester United cruised into the Carabao Cup fourth round with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

Alejandro Garnacho and Casemiro scored for United in the first half, putting them on their way to the round of 16. Ten minutes after the break, Anthony Martial scored with a first-time shot off a cross from Casemiro.

After a few weeks of chaos, United manager Erik ten Hag must have been glad for a simple night as his team won their biggest game of a tough season so far.

With Mason Mount back in the starting lineup and Sofyan Amrabat making his first start — albeit at left back — Ten Hag was able to integrate some key pieces of his United puzzle to a certain extent.

There were also many examples of controlled possession, which many of Ten Hag’s fans have been disappointed that he hasn’t done more of so far.

The plan seemed to be to overload United’s right side with high passes across the pitch from the left, which both Amrabat and Mount were able to do.

As a left-back who plays on the right side, Morocco’s Amrabat stood out. The man on loan from Fiorentina had a bad shot early on, but he was otherwise great. He had great passing range, a lot of energy, and could spot danger when it came up.

The other fullback Diogo Dalot scored the first goal when he ran onto Facundo Pellistri’s pass and sent a low cross back for Garnacho to finish. Six minutes later, a great corner from Mount found Casemiro, who doubled the home team’s lead and pretty much ended the game.

Martial scored his first goal of the season with a shot from a sharp angle. It was his first time playing at Old Trafford since Ten Hag was booed for putting him in for Rasmus Hojlund against Brighton.

After sitting on the sidelines for most of the night, goalkeeper Andre Onana had to make two great saves late in the game. Both times, he stopped Palace striker Jean-Phillippe Mateta’s close-range shots.

To top off a bad night for the Eagles, who play here again in the Premier League on Saturday, custodian Dean Henderson only lasted 19 minutes on his debut against his old team because he got muscle pain after making a simple clearance.
