Khanyisa Mayo netted the winning goal to inspire Cape Town City to a 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium in the DStv Premiership on Tuesday evening.
The home side showed their intent early on and should have broken the deadlock in the 12th minute but Pule Mmodi could not bypass Darren Keet in a one-on-one situation.
City had a chance of their own in the 28th minute when Khanyisa Mayo tried to latch on to a cross from Relebogile Mokhuoane but some good defending from Reeve Frosler saw him clear the ball away from danger.
Nkosingiphile Ngcobo should have handed his side the lead in the 33rd minute but Keet came to his side’s rescue to deny the midfielder.
There was action at both ends in the final minutes of the first half as Mayo saw his header sail inches wide of goal before Saile guided his header narrowly wide of the target moments later.
Neither side were able to find the back of the net in the first half as the game went into the break locked at goalless.
Eric Tinkler brought on fresh legs after the restart as Darwin Gonzalez, Jaedin Rhodes and Taahir Goedeman came on to replace Thami Mkhize, Tshegofatso Nyama and Katlego Mokhuoane.
It was City who eventually drew first blood when they took the lead in the 58th minute after Mayo headed the ball home to bag his fourth goal of the season following an inch-perfect cross from Darwin Gonzalez.
Molefi Ntseki opted to make changes of his own at the hour mark when Keagan Dolly and Ranga Chivaviro came on to replace Saile and Mmodi.
The visitors had an opportunity to double their lead in the 69th minute when Mayo picked out Nodada but the City midfielder showed his shot from distance saved by Khune.
Keet came to his side’s rescue three minutes later when he produced a good save to deny Ngcobo’s header at goal.
74. Marc Van Heerden comes on to replace Thabiso Kutumela.
Tinkler rang more chances as Kutumela was replaced by Marc Van Heerden in the 74th minute while Ntseki took off Maart to bring on former City midfielder Mduduzi Mdantsane three minutes later.
Amakhosi pushed forward in the closing stages of the game as they went in search of an equalising goal but Keet continued to deny the home side a goal as the game ended 1-0 in favour of City.
