Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe has been named as the new captain of France following the retirement of Hugo Lloris.

The 24-year-old forward for Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappe, accepted the offer after discussions with coach Didier Deschamps earlier in the day.

After losing the World Cup final in December, Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris concluded his international career in January.

Lloris, 36, had served as captain for over a decade.

Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid was named vice-captain after Raphael Varane of Manchester United hung up his boots following the December loss to Argentina.

Mbappe, who has played 66 times for France, was heavily linked with the position for weeks and scored a hat-trick in the 2018 World Cup final loss after helping Les Bleus win the title.

The former Monaco attacker is PSG’s vice-captain behind Brazil’s Marquinhos and captained the team during Sunday’s loss to Rennes in the absence of the defender.

His first match as captain will be Friday’s Euro 2024 qualifier at the Stade de France against the Netherlands.
