Mokwena have since penned an emotional letter to the club following his departure.

Dear Mamelodi Sundowns family,

It’s taken me a while to pen this… and no it is not pens fault (clearly) but more because I could not find the right words as I bid farewell to the club which has been my home for 12 years, divided by 3 years at Orlando Pirates, but I do have to at some point have to officially say Good Bye.

And so with a heavy heart but yet a grateful spirit… bid you farewell and I wish to thank you all. The journey I have shared with each and every one of you has been nothing short of remarkable, from my humble beginnings as a youth coach to leading this incredible team to numerous victories and accolades including those we won while being the clubs assistant coach.

I never envisioned this day would come, not so soon anyway, nor did I ever expect to part ways in this manner.

But as life often dictates its own course, as a stoic, I have come to accept that sometimes, endings are just new beginnings in disguise.

To the Chairman, the Motsepe family, the dedicated technical team, and the entire staff at Mamelodi Sundowns – I extend my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support, incredible dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence. It has been an honor and a privilege to work alongside such talented professionals, who are so skilled and I got the most amazing opportunity to not only watch you pour out your hearts and souls into the club every single day but I learnt so much from you. Thank you.

To the players, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt tribute and deepest thanks to each and every one of you who have not only excelled in your achievements on the field but have also proven to be amazing individuals off the field. Your dedication, hard work, and talents have inspired many around the continent and maybe even the world, but it is your mentality, kindness, humility, and integrity that truly set you apart as exceptional people.

The clouds don’t carry enough rain for me to shower you with due praise on how you conducted yourself throughout my tenure. For 91 matches, you gave you all and you always have demonstrated the true meaning of brotherhood, sportsmanship, teamwork and perseverance. Your incredible achievements serve as a testament to your unwavering commitment to excellence. Your passion for the game, coupled with your compassionate hearts and generous spirits, have not only left an indelible mark on all those who have had the privilege of watching you play but me as well.

I just want you to remember, that your influence extends far beyond the boundaries of the playing field. You are not only champions in the game but also in life, and for that, we are I am forever grateful. Thank you for sharing your remarkable talents with the world, for being shining examples of what it means to be truly great, both as athletes and as human beings.

May your journey continue to be filled with kindness, joy, success, and fulfillment, and may your legacy continue to inspire generations to come. You are truly extraordinary individuals, and the impact you have made in my life and the hearts of many will never be forgotten.

And finally, To our loyal supporters, the yellow nation, the backbone of this institution, your unwavering passion and unwavering spirit have fueled our achievements and brought joy to our hearts. Your drum beat, chants and cheers will forever echo in my memory, a constant reminder of the bond that was growing stronger and stronger by the day. I wish you everything of the best.

Reflecting on the milestones we have achieved together – the league titles, the cups, the remarkable records broken, and the historic victories – I am reminded of the great work we did together, fueled by teamwork, resilience, and unwavering dedication. Each triumph and failure was a testament to the collective efforts of everyone involved, and I am humbled to have been a part of this incredible journey with you.

Thank you, Mamelodi Sundowns, for the memories, the lessons, and the unwavering support. Until we meet again, may success and blessings follow each and every one of you.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Rulani Mokwena
