Orlando Pirates are still without a win under Rhulani Mokwena after a 0-0 draw with Golden Arrows on Wednesday evening extended their dry run to six matches in all competitions.
The Soweto giants were looking to bounce back from their recent exit from the Caf Champions League, and snap their winless run of games heading into the fixture with Steve Komphela’s side.
Arrows, on the other hand, were looking to make things as tough as possible for their opponents, whose last league goal came in the 3-1 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic on the opening weekend of the season.
Pirates dominated the possession in the opening stages of the half, but were struggling to find the killer ball. Despite their early spells of possession it was Arrows who came closest to breaking the deadlock with 18 minutes gone, but Nkosinathi Sibisi could not hit target with his header from six yards out.
Komphela’s men were disciplined in their approach and weren’t allowing their opposition any clear-cut chances. Pirates needed a set play to threaten five minutes before the break, but Innocent Maela hit the crossbar with his towering header following a corner.
It was 0-0 at the break with neither side really doing enough to take the lead.
The second half quickly fell into the pattern of the first, with Pirates having the lion’s share of the possession but were met by a determined Arrows defence.
Frustration was beginning to grow in the Pirates side. It almost got worse with 15 minutes to go as Sibiya’s ambitious attempt was well tipped over the bar by Wayne Sandilands.
Try as they might, neither side could find a way through as the encounter finished goalless.
