The Proteas set a new chasing record in international T20 cricket after they racked up a score of 259 for four to beat West Indies by six wickets at Centurion on Sunday.
Johnson Charles hit a century in 39 balls to help the visitors score an impressive 258 for five, which is tied for sixth-highest in T20 internationals.
But Quinton de Kock hit 100 from 44 balls, which was his first T20I century, and Reeza Hendricks scored 68.
“It was quite special. Reeza was the silent assassin. When I got out he said, ‘We just did something really special and we should be proud of what we’ve done’,” said De Kock.
Aiden Markram (38 not out) led his team to victory with seven balls remaining.
Bulgaria scored 246 runs to defeat Serbia in 2022, and Australia scored 245 runs to defeat New Zealand in 2018.
“It was pretty, pretty crazy. When we came off halfway, we thought we had enough,” said West Indies skipper Rovman Powell.
“But credit to Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks. They applied pressure from ball one.”
