Manchester United benefited from a controversial VAR decision as Marcus Rashford tucked home from the penalty spot to secure a 3-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain and send the English club through to the last eight of the Champions League.
PSG had cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory in the first leg at Old Trafford, and faced an injury-hit United side who were also without the suspended Paul Pogba.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, however, got off to the perfect start as Thilo Kehrer’s blind back pass was picked up by the in-form Romelu Lukaku, who made no mistake by rounding the keeper and stroking the ball into the back of the net with just two minutes played.
PSG instantly drove forward in search of a goal, and it only took them ten minutes to find the equaliser as Juan Bernat tapped home a Kylian Mbappe cross at the back post.
The home side were controlling the game and looked the more likely to score, but calamity hit again as Gianluigi Buffon spilled a long-range Rashford effort, allowing Lukaku to bounce and fire United into the lead with thirty minutes on the clock.
Thomas Tuchel’s men went into half-time 2-1 down, but still had a slender one-goal lead on aggregate.
The French team started the second half with real intention, but despite dominating possession they were struggling to break down a determined United side.
Then, just as time looked to be up for United, they were gifted a goal through VAR after the referee reviewed a Presnel Kimpembe handball.
The decision may have been a contentious one, but Rashford stepped up and smashed home with power to give the Red Devils the goal to draw them level on aggregate, but through on away goals.
The referee then added a chunk of added time, but United managed to hold on a historic victory.
