A brace from Rodrygo saw Real Madrid cruised into the Champions League semi-finals following their emphatic 4-0 aggregate victory against Chelsea that ends a disastrous season for the Blues.
The home team went into the game at Stamford Bridge with a bad record and history, and Frank Lampard was back in charge for a second time.
They got off to a good start, but they missed a lot of big chances that would have put a lot of pressure on the champions from last year.
Rodrygo scored in the 58th minute after a quick counterattack, and he scored again with 10 minutes left to make it 2-0. This made Chelsea pay for their wastefulness.
“We suffered a lot and helped us stay at 0-0 at the end of the first half,” Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti told BT Sport.
“Second half we were much better and scored the two goals. We are happy to have qualified.”
The 2021 European champions, Chelsea, have now lost all four games since Lampard took over as caretaker manager earlier this month after Graham Potter was fired.
Lampard, who was also the manager of the club from 2019 to early 2021, complained about how wasteful his team was.
“We played really well for 60 minutes,” he said. “We created chances but you have to take them.”
The former Chelsea midfielder told his team that playing for the club should be enough to keep them going in the last few weeks of the season.
“You’re playing for Chelsea,” he said. “So regardless, every game you play you have to give everything. I won’t let anyone off the hook and we have to show. That standard cannot drop.”
Ancelotti kept the same team that won the first leg 2-0 last week. Chelsea’s caretaker manager Lampard, on the other hand, brought back Reece James, Mateo Kovacic, and N’Golo Kante.
Even though they are having trouble right now, the home team got off to a good start against the 14-time winners.
