Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the Caf Champions League Group Stages after thrashing Cote d’Or 11-1 in the second leg on Friday evening, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.
The Brazilians came into this game after claiming an emphatic 5-0 victory over Côte in the first round first leg on 14 September.
Pitso Mosimane will be without the services of Tiyani Mabunda (ankle), Lebohang Maboe (gastritis), and Bangaly Soumahoro (ankle sprain), while captain Hlompho Kekana is still suspended and will miss the match, sitting out match three of a four-match suspension.
The home side showed their intent early on had had a go at goal but the Côte d’Or defense scrambled to clear the ball away from danger.
Themba Zwane handed Sundowns the lead in the ninth minute before Gaston Sirino doubled the hosts lead 10 minutes later.
Sibusiso Vilakazi then bagged a brace in quick succession when he found the back of the net between the 21st and 24th minute to make it 4-0.
Vilakazi then completed his hat-trick in the 39th minute when he slotted the ball home after Côte d’Or failed to clean their lines.
Thapelo Morena rounded off the scoring In the first half after nodding the ball home to make it 6-0 as the game went into the half time interval.
Sundowns wasted no time in extended their lead even further in the second half as Motjeka Madisha fired his well-struck shot from inside the box past the Côte d’Or keeper.
Anele Ngcongca made it 7-0 in the 57th minute when he ripped through the Côte d’Or defense to fire the ball home.
Zwane then scored his second goal of the game after 74 minutes after a excellent turn in the box to ode his man before hitting his first time shot into the back of the net before Côte d’Or captain Beniot put the ball into his own net from a Sirino cross into the box.
Mosimane opted to make a change in the 78th minute when Sirino made way for Phakamani Mahlambi.
The visitors did eventually manage to pull a goal back in the 79th minute before Mauricio Affonso came on to score his debut goal three minutes later.
However, Sundowns held on to their massive lead over Côte d’Or until the final whistle to advance to the next round of the competition with a 16-1 aggregate victory.
