Sevilla were crowned Europa League champions for a record seventh time after beating Roma 4-1 on penalties in the final in Budapest following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Yassine Bounou was the hero for Sevilla as he saved two penalty kicks during the shootout while the Spanish team converted all four attempts.

Gonzalo Montiel, who scored the game-winning penalty kick for Argentina in last year’s World Cup final, did so again for Sevilla after he was permitted to retake his kick due to encroachment.

Gianluca Mancini’s own goal gave Sevilla an equaliser early in the second half after Paulo Dybala opened the scoring for Roma after 35 minutes.

Chris Smalling’s header off a corner deep into added time at the conclusion of extra time nearly gave the Italians the game-winning goal.

Bounou denied Mancini and Roger Ibanez in the shootout as Jose Mourinho suffered his first loss in a major European final in his sixth attempt.
