Mamelodi Sundowns claimed their 12th straight win in the DStv Premiership following their narrow 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Brazilians got off to a great start and nearly took the lead in the fifth minute but Themba Zwane saw his strike deflect off the Chiefs’ defence before hitting the post and safely out of play.

Sundowns did eventually manage to take the lead in the 20th minute after Neo Maema found the top corner of the net after being set up by Peter Shalulile.

Keagan Dolly should have levelled matters on the half hour mark but he hit the post from a tight angle after he was superbly played through on goal by Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, however, the former Sundowns star was flagged for offside.

Sundowns pushed forward in the closing stages of the first half as they went in search of their second goal but Maema blazed his effort wide of goal as the game went into the break 1-0 in favour of the Brazilians.

Amakhosi opted to bring on fresh legs at the restart as Samkelo Zwane was taken off and replaced by Siyethemba Sithebe, who nearly made an instant impact when he fired his effort high and wide of the target in the 48th minute.

Sundowns nearly doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Cassius Mailula darted down the field before creating space to shoot but the attacker could only hit the side netting with his strike.

Chiefs pushed forward through Dolly and Ashley Du Preez as they went in search of an equaliser but they were unable to find the back of the net.

Sundowns held on until the final whistle to make history by recording their 12th straight victory in the league.
