Champions Mamelodi Sundowns ended their DStv Premiership campaign with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Royal AM at the Chatsworth Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The Brazilians got off to the perfect start as they managed to break the deadlock after 13 minutes when Gaston Sirino found the back of the net with a side-foot volley to make it 1-0.
Royal AM had a chance to level matters in the 24th minute, but Victor Letsoalo’s effort was well saved by Sundowns keeper Kenndey Mweene.
Peter Shalulile had a chance to double his side’s lead in the 36th minute, but the Namibian forward saw his effort blocked.
Divine Lunga came to his side’s rescue in the 38th minute when he stood his ground inside the box to keep out Royal AM’s powerful shot at goaA.
At the half-time break, the scoreline read 1-0 in favour of Sundowns.
Sundowns showed their intent early in the second half as they managed to double their lead two minutes in, when Thabiso Kutumela found the net with an inch-perfect finish in the bottom corner.
The Brazilians added a third goal two minutes after the hour mark when Teboho Mokwena played an unselfish pass to Peter Shalulile, who walked the ball into the back of the net.
Royal AM had a chance to pull a goal back a minute later, but Mwenne made his experience count as he denied Letsoalo from the penalty spot.
Letsoalo did manage to reduce the deficit in the 69th minute when he received a pass from Tebogo Potsane before curling his effort past Mweene to make it 3-1.
The home side then managed to pull another goal back in the 76th minute when Mokete Mogaila slotted the ball home to make it 3-2 before Grant Kekana made a vital block to deny Royal AM another goal in the 83rd minute.
However, Sundowns managed to hold on to their lead over Royal AM until the final whistle to secure the win and walk away with all three points in their final game of the season.
