Mamelodi Sundowns moved 10 points clear at the top of the DStv Premiership table following their 2-0 victory over Richards Bay at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday evening.
From the first minute, the Natal Rich Boys were under pressure, and goalkeeper Salim Magoola, who has been great this season, had to stop Themba Zwane at the near post in the 10th minute.
Zwane had the best chance for the visitors. He was sent through on goal in the 27th minute, but Magoola stopped him again because he wanted to keep his 11th clean sheet of the season.
But Richards Bay’s goalkeeper was finally beaten six minutes before halftime when Aubrey Modiba’s looping pass was beautifully finished by Cassius Mailula to give Sundowns a 1-0 lead going into the break.
At halftime, Luvuyo Memela came on and changed the way the game was going. The attacker had a chance to tie the score at the hour mark, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made a great save.
But Magoola gave the ball to Sundowns, which led to a goal. Magoola was then punished by Haashim Domingo, who scored with a powerful low shot in the 66th minute to make it 2-0 for Sundowns.
Richards attacked as they tried to get a consolation goal, but they couldn’t really test Williams in the last part of the game, and Sundowns won 2-0 in their first league match against the home team.
