Mamelodi Sundowns will qualify for the Caf Champions League quarter-finals as Group A winners after hammering Al-Hilal 4-2 at the Al Hilal Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Brazilians got off to a perfect start, breaking the deadlock in the second minute after Peter Shalulile found the back of the net.

Sundowns were then reduced to 10 men eight minutes later when Brian Onyango received his marching orders with a red card for a last-man foul.

The visitors opted to make a substitution in the 16th minute to compensate for the red-carded Onyango as Themba Zwane was taken off and replaced by Grant Kekana.

Reyaad Pieterse came to his side’s rescue in the 23rd minute when he stretched to comfortably collect the ball after Al-Hilal attempted a long-range effort at goal.

Sundowns managed to double their lead on the half-hour mark when Teboho Mokoena found the back of the net with an unstoppable free kick to make it 2-0.

Pieterse continued to command his area as he came off his line in the 37th minute to put a stop to Hilal’s counter-attack before making a fine save in the dying minutes of the first half to preserve their two-goal lead heading into the break.

Sundowns picked up where they left off in the first half and nearly doubled their lead early in the second half, but Kapinga ball was cut out before it could hit target.

The home side managed to pull a goal back in the 56th minute when Yasir Mozamil found the back of the net to make it 2-1.

Sundowns responded four minutes later with a goal of their own when Thapelo Morena made it 3-1 with a fine finish to restore their two-goal cushion.

The Brazilians opted to make a double substitution in the 62nd minute as Domingo and Kapinga were taken off and replaced by Lebohang Maboe and Neo Maema.

Lyle Lakay had a chance to extend his side’s lead in the 69th minute with a powerful free kick, but the Al-Hilal keeper palmed his effort away from danger.

Sundowns made another two substitutions in the 73rd minute when Sibusiso Vilakazi and Surprise Ralani came on to replace Shalulile and Jali, respectively.

The Brazilians extended their lead even further in the 89th minute when Morena found the net with a calm finish to complete his brace.

The home side were then awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time and after the penalty was saved by Pieterse, Mokhtar Elnour Eltayib stepped up to slot home the rebound as the game ended 4-2 in favour of Sundowns.
