Union Saint-Gilloise forward Percy Tau and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango have been shortlisted for the 2018 African Player of the Year award.
Former Sundowns teammates Tau and Onyango have been shortlisted alongside the best in Africa, including the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Naby Keita, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Riyad Mahrez.
Tau has been in fine form for club and country this season and has already bagged four goals and assisted a further five from 13 apperances in all competitions for Union Saint-Gilloise.
He has also managed to create one goal and score one against Nigeria and Seychelles in their qualifiers as he continues to help Bafana Bafana in their mission to qualify for the African Cup of Nations.
Onyango, who is the No 1 goalkeeper for Sundowns and Uganda, will be hoping to make his way into the top three this time around, although he faces stiff competition in the 34-man shortlist.
The Sundowns shot-stopper helped the Brazilians to secure the Absa Premiership title last season and has managed to play a leading role in helping Uganda secure their place at next year’s Afcon.
Meanwhile, Banyana Banyana’s Desiree Ellis, Janine van Wyk and Thembi Kgatlana have all been nominated for the Women’s Coach of the year and Player of the Year awards, while the South African women’s national team have been shortlisted for the Women’s National Team of the Year award.
The awards ceremony will be held in Senegal on Tuesday 8 January 2019.
