Kelechi Iheanacho’s first-half volley fired Nigeria to a 1-0 win over Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, while both other games finished 0-0 as defending champions Algeria failed to hit the back of the net in a goalless draw with Sierra Leone. Catch up with the highlights here.
Nigeria 1-0 Egypt
Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho scored as Nigeria put a troubled buildup to the Afcon in Cameroon behind them on Tuesday to beat disappointing Egypt 1-0 in Garoua.
Iheanacho struck after 30 minutes to take the Super Eagles to the top of the table after the opening match in Group D, which includes Guinea-Bissau and Sudan.
Nigeria fired German coach Gernot Rohr in December after an unimpressive World Cup-qualifying campaign and put former national star Augustine Eguavoen in temporary charge.
Eguavoen’s squad were without forwards Victor Osimhen, Emmanuel Dennis and Odion Ighalo for a variety of reasons, but his team did him proud against Mohamed Salah-captained Egypt.
Prolific Liverpool scorer Salah hardly touched the ball and had only one chance, late in the second half, to equalise.

Algeria 0-0 Sierra Leone
Algeria began their defence of the Afcon title with an underwhelming 0-0 draw with Sierra Leone in Douala on Tuesday, as Riyad Mahrez’s side struggled to break down one of the tournament’s rank outsiders.
Qatar-based winger Yacine Brahimi missed the holders’ best chance early in the second half, when he found himself with just the goalkeeper to beat, only for Mohamed Kamara to hold his shot at the second attempt.
The draw allows Algeria to extend their remarkable unbeaten run in competitive action to 35 games, just two shy now of Italy’s record of 37 without defeat.
However, it also means their chief Group E rivals Ivory Coast can seize the initiative by beating Equatorial Guinea at the same venue on Wednesday.

Sudan 0-0 Guinea Bissau
Guinea-Bissau are still without a win in three Afcon appearances as Judilson ‘Pele’ Gomes missed a penalty and the woodwork saved Sudan twice in a 0-0 draw.
