Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Matías Esquivel has joined Argentine outfit Club Atlético Talleres on loan until the end of the season.

This 25-year-old joined Sundowns from Club Atlético Lanús last season and scored two goals and grabbed one assist in 13 appearances across all competitions in his debut campaign in the Premier Soccer League.

This will be Esquivel’s second loan stint at Talleres, having previously been on their books in 2022.

Esquivel featured 31 times for the Argentine club while scoring six goals and registering four assists before returning to Club Atletico Lanus.

Club Atletico Talleres have since released the following statement on the matter, which reads:

Matías is 25 years old and was born in Avellaneda (Buenos Aires) on March 22, 1999. With 139 professional games, the footballer has 15 goals throughout his career.

El Chino started playing football at Lanús, a team with which he made his professional debut in December 2019. At Granate he played 95 matches between the Professional League Tournaments, the Argentine Cup and CONMEBOL competitions. With the team from the south of Buenos Aires, the creative midfielder scored 7 goals.

Esquivel already had a successful stint at Talleres, during the 2022 season. Wearing the Matador jersey, he played 31 matches between the Professional League Tournaments, the Argentine Cup and the CONMEBOL Libertadores. During that year, in addition to scoring 6 goals, he was a protagonist of the team that historically qualified for the Quarterfinals of the Libertadores.

Last season, Matías Esquivel played for Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African Premier League, where he played 13 games and scored 2 goals.

The Scouting Department of Club Talleres has closely followed Matías’ development, highlighting his versatility to occupy more than one position within the midfield. In addition, due to his technical quality and agility, Esquivel is a player who can provide solutions to the team, generating danger in the final third of the field of play; Esquivel also has a good repertoire of dribbles, assists and execution of mid-distance shots. Finally, the experience gained during his last two seasons has given the player the ability to mature in decision-making.

Matías Esquivel, a well-known member of the Club who is returning for a triple competition season, is a new reinforcement and joins the institution for a period of one year.
