Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro insists that his side showed their determination and character to secure the win over Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Buccaneers exact their revenge on Mamelodi Sundowns after claiming a 2-1 victory at the FNB Stadium on Sunday.
Pirates opened the scoring and doubled their lead with two goals in two minutes courtesy of Relebohile Mofokeng before Khuliso Mudau scored a 66th-minute consolation goal as Pirates held on for the win in Johannesburg.
The win sees Pirates close the gap on Sundowns to 15 points and remain in second place with 43 points after 19 matches.
The Sea Robbers will now shift their focus to their upcoming CAF Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash against MC Alger at the Stade du 5 Juillet on April 1.
“Yeah, well executed. Difficult to play against Sundowns, trust me, so difficult. They are so good,” Riveiro told on SuperSport TV after the game.
“We started very well getting the lead. We want to be in advantage. Finally, you know, faced one game against them, and be us, the ones who is leading the game. Getting the double lead, it was something else.
“Obviously, it was a stormy beginning of the game from the boys. They really trust on what we were doing on the field and the consequences, excellent performance.
“Obviously suffering a little bit in the second period, but not much. We managed to contain them, usually in areas where we are not used to defend that close to Chaine.
“But congratulations to the players, because they managed to show who they are when we when we are in the right in the right space.”
