Bayern Munich have officially announced the appointment of former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel as their new manager after parting ways with Julian Nagelsmann.
Nagelsmann, who is 35 years old, led Bayern to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Next month, Bayern will play Manchester City, who won the Premier League.
But Bayern hasn’t been dominating the Bundesliga like they usually do so far this season. As a result, they fired Nagelsmann and hired Tuchel, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021. Tuchel is 49 years old.
“FC Bayern and head coach Julian Nagelsmann have parted company… Nagelsmann will be succeeded by Thomas Tuchel,” the reigning German champions said in a statement.
Bayern said that Tuchel would have a contract through June 2025, and on Monday, he will be in charge of training for the first time. On Saturday morning, he will be shown to the press.
Bayern chairman Oliver Kahn said: “Personally and on behalf of FC Bayern, I would like to thank Julian and his coaching team, and wish everyone the best of luck for the future.”
Just two years ago, Bayern signed Nagelsmann to a five-year deal, but nerves have been getting worse as the Bundesliga champions have been struggling to keep their title.
They are second in the league table, behind Borussia Dortmund, which is where Tuchel used to play.
Tuchel — who Bayern had eyed previously but lost out to other top-flight European clubs — has been in between jobs after he was fired by Chelsea in September.
His first game will be on April 1, when Bayern plays Dortmund, the team Tuchel was in charge of from 2015 to 2017 before leaving for PSG.
Although Bayern beat PSG in the last 16 of the Champions League, dumping out a team including Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi, the Germans then suffered a blow when they lost 2-1 against Bayer Leverkusen last Sunday.
After that, Hasan Salihamidzic, Bayern’s sports director, gave a harsh review of the team, saying that the players had “so little drive, mentality, tackling, and assertiveness.”
