Bayern Munich have signed left-back Raphael Guerreiro on a free transfer after he parted ways with Borussia Dortmund.
The 29-year-old Guerreiro moves to Bayern after seven years with Dortmund, where he won two German Cups as a member of Portugal’s national team. His contract with the German kings will last until 2026.
Guerreiro, who won Euro 2016 with Portugal, will reunite with Thomas Tuchel, the manager at Dortmund who brought him there.
“When the call came from FC Bayern, my decision was made quickly. It’s an honour for me to play for this big club and I also really appreciate Thomas Tuchel from our time together at Dortmund,” the defender said in a statement.
“I’m a player who always likes to have the ball — it’s about dominating the game and I want to create chances.
“I will do everything to win as many titles as possible. That is the philosophy of FC Bayern.”
As the season came to a close, Guerreiro was a major source of creativity for Dortmund from the midfield position.
In addition to his four goals, Guerreiro led the league with 12 assists.
“Raphael Guerreiro has been one of the best and most consistent players in the Bundesliga for years,” said Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.
A tense final day of the 2022-23 Bundesliga season ended with Bayern edging out Dortmund on goal differential. Their 11-year league championship streak ended.
Robert Lewandowski and Mario Goetze are just two of the many players who have transferred from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich in the past decade.
The most recent player to make the switch was defender Mats Hummels, who left for Bayern Munich in 2016 and then returned to Borussia Dortmund in 2019.
Bayern have added Guerreiro to their roster this summer following the free transfer of RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer.
