In what is an evolving and growing rivalry, Egyptian giants Al Ahly have looked to up the ante for their Caf Champions League match against Mamelodi Sundowns by calling for fans to be allowed in the stadium.

The two African juggernauts will come up against each other yet again in this year’s group stages of the Champions League.

The two teams have a budding rivalry, kickstarted by Sundowns’ 5-0 drubbing of the Red Eagles in 2019 while Mosimane was still the Brazilians’ coach. Mosimane then moved to Egypt, further fuelling the fire of rivalry and he was subjected to a hostile reception when he returned to Attridgeville to face his former club last season.

The two clubs then clashed over the transfer of Gaston Sirino before the Egyptians signed former Downs golden boy Percy Tau.

The two clubs will renew the rivalry this weekend and, according to Egyptian reports, the defending champions are hoping to have their loyal fans in the stadium to back them.

“We are speaking with Caf and the security authorities to request fan attendance in the Al Ahly and Sundowns match,” Al Ahly executive director Saad Shalaby told ONTime Sport TV as per KingFut.

It remains to be seen what Caf’s decision will be, but if fans will be allowed into the the WE Al Ahly Al-Salam Stadium it would undoubtedly hand the home side a massive boost.
