Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane believes his side face an uphill battle if they are to overturn Al Ahly’s 2-0 first-leg advantage this weekend in the Caf Champions League quarter-finals, but warns the Egyptians that playing in Pretoria will be a different story.
The Brazilians were downed 2-0 over the weekend in Egypt in the Caf Champions League quarter-final first leg against the Champions League giants.
The result has left Mosimane and his charges with a big task in the return leg at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday. The Downs coach believes his side can get the job done on home turf, although it will not be easy.
‘I think we played OK, we played well – it’s just that two goals is a bit difficult for us to turn the results around but we have to. We have to turn the volume up in Pretoria, we don’t have an option, we have to score in Pretoria,’ said a dejected Mosimane after the game in Egypt.
‘We don’t sit back because we want to sit back, Al Ahly is pushing us back. I had to protect goals. But congratulations to Al Ahly, they are a big team, but we managed to deal with the pressure.’
Last season when Al Ahly came to Pretoria to play Sundowns, they were hammered 5-0 in the quarter-finals first leg and Mosimane will be hoping for a similar type of performance and result on Saturday.
‘Come to Pretoria, it’s a different story there, ask other teams. It’s totally a different game and I can’t explain it,’ concluded Mosimane.
The Brazilians have an impeccable record at home in the Champions League having not lost since June 2017 to Tunisia’s Esperance, a run of 18 matches which included 14 wins and four draws.
