Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango is set to remain on the sidelines for six to eight weeks following his knee injury.
The Ugandan shot-stopper missed the Brazilians’ goalless draw against newly crowned Telkom Knockout champions, as well as the club’s 5-1 thumping of Leones Vegetarianos in their previous Caf Champions League encounter, after picking up an injury during the Tshwane derby win over SuperSport United on 1 December.
The 33-year-old was recently nominated for the Caf African Player of the Year award along with former Sundowns teammate Percy Tau.
Onyango confirmed that he will be sidelined for over six weeks with a knee injury, but insists that he will be back in the new year.
‘I am still out for six more weeks. It’s a grade two to three knee injury,’ Onyango told the media.
‘But I am getting strong day by day, because I do rehabilitation every day with the physio.
‘I am hoping to be back before the six to eight weeks and get ready for the second round.’
Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane also recently confirmed that the likes of Themba Zwane, Rivaldo Coetzee and Sibusiso Vilakazi remain on the sidelines as they continue to recover from their respective injuries.
Mamelodi Sundowns will be in action on Sunday when they take on Libyan side Al Ahly Benghazi in Cairo.
