The Brazilians, who suffered a 1-0 defeat to the defending champions on Friday, will now need to win at home against Guinean outfit Horoya in their final game in Group C in order to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Mosimane‚ though‚ in the continental game of small margins‚ does not believe his team have slipped significantly from 2016‚ when Downs were a new force on the continent‚ and a surprise package who could boss opposition off the park.

Mosimane believes his side were not necessarily weaker against Wydad but admits that the lack of composure and decision-making in the final third let them down on the day.

‘I don’t think we are weak‚’ Mosimane told the media after the game.

‘I think tonight we played better than the last time we came here [in the 2017 quarter-final‚ where Downs lost on penalties].

‘It’s just that – you know football; the guy takes one chance and he scores. My No 10‚ Jose Ali Meza‚ got a chance in front of the goalkeeper – he didn’t take it.

‘When you play a game of two teams of high quality‚ it will always be like this.’

Mamelodi Sundowns will face Highlands Park in their next PSL outing on Wednesday, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30pm.
