Mamelodi Sundowns secured top spot in Group C in the Caf Champions League after a 1-0 win over Wydad Casablanca on Saturday afternoon.
Downs came into the game looking to seal top spot against their Moroccan opponents, who had already done so.
The home side almost got off to a disastrous start when they gave the ball away outside the box, but Zouhair El Moutaraji couldn’t capitalise as Denis Onyango saved well from close range.
The Brazilians grew into the game, though, and had a golden chance to score when Themba Zwane unleashed a strike from just outside but Wydad shotstopper Ahmed Tagnaouti was equal to the effort with 18 minutes gone.
With the break looming, Pitso Mosimane’s team were awarded a penalty when Maboe was pushed down inside the box. Ricardo Nascimento stepped up and made no mistake from 12 yards out to score the opening goal.
At half time, the Brazilians were 1-0 up.
The second half started slowly as both sides looked to give nothing away.
Masandawana had a glorious chance to double their lead in the 72nd minute after Sirino led a counter-attack and played a through-ball to Zwane, but his shot was leg-saved by Tagnaouti.
Downs looked to edge towards victory but Sebastien Desabre’s charges had a gilt-edged chance to grab a late draw with two minutes left in the 90. Onyango, though, came to the rescue as he produced a stunning save to deny Kazadi Kasengu, who connected well with a cross into the box.
Sundowns managed to hold on to their lead and seal top spot in Group C.
