Mamelodi Sundowns scored two vital away goals but were denied victory after a late equaliser rescued a 2-2 draw for AS Maniema Union in their CAF Champions League second preliminary round first-leg clash on Sunday.
Downs got the game off to a perfect start when Themba Zwane fired them into the lead in the ninth minute to put the Brazilians in control.
The home side, however, hit back moments before the break to ensure the game went into the break with the team’s level.
The South African side looked to influence the game from the bench with the introduction of Sibusiso Vilakazi and Sphelele Mkhulise for strikers Thabiso Kutumela and Pavol Safranko.
The move paid off for the Brazilians as they thought they grabbed the winner as Zwane netted his second of the game with five minutes to play, but they were pegged back in the last minute as Maniema snatched an equaliser.
The 2016 Champions League winners will though take the advantage of scoring the two away goals.
