AmaZulu FC coach Benni McCarthy believes the Caf Champions League will give his players an experience of a lifetime after their group stage opponents were revealed on Tuesday.
This will be the first time ever in the history of the club existence that Usuthu will be competing in the Champions League after qualifying for the group stages after they defeated Big Bullets and TP Mazembe in the qualifying rounds.
Usuthu were drawn in Group B and McCarthy’s side are accompanied by Raja (Morocco), Horoya (Guinea) and ES Setif (Algeria).
However, McCarthy is confident his side can compete and do well in the Champions League and will use their experience in the DStv Premiership to their advantage.
“Yeah of course it’s extremely important you know, hopefully, we can learn from by playing against them. It also gives ourselves competitiveness, because we saw against Mamelodi Sundowns the capabilities we have,” McCarthy told the media.
“They are top team in the league and the continent, how we were able to handle ourselves – we showed that. So this Champions League will give players an experience of a lifetime and hopefully it will be an experience that they will have every single year so that they can improve.
“It would be good to compete against top teams and coaches in the continent and who knows maybe we can reunite with coach Pitso Mosimane, I’m not saying we are ready for that kind of challenge because they are in a different league with Al Ahly, he is completely different from where we are as AmaZulu.
“We also have that excitement, we also have some sort of expectations of what we want to achieve.”
