The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has decided to back Fifa’s plans to host the World Cup every two years if the organisation can prove it is feasible.

Caf held a media conference on Friday afternoon with the topic of a biennial World Cup one of the points of discussion.

According to reports, the federation has decided to back Fifa and support the “decision of the Fifa Congress to conduct a feasibility study” for a biennial World Cup.

Caf were reportedly helped swayed during the general assembly by Fifa’s chief of global development, Arsene Wenger.

“Caf welcomes the Fifa Congress decision to conduct a feasibility study on hosting men’s and women’s Fifa World Cups every two years,” the Caf resolution read, as per insidethegames.biz.

“If the Fifa study concludes it is feasible, Caf will fully support hosting the men’s and women’s Fifa World Cup every two years.”

Plans to host the World Cup every two years have been met by a lot of criticism, with many suggesting players wouldn’t be able to handle the demands of added pressure on an already packed schedule.

Patrice Motsepe insisted that the biennial Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) would be unaffected.

“The main competition for Africa, which is Afcon, will definitely continue,” Motsepe told the media conference.

“Part of the process is to ensure that the players do not play more matches or games than they did historically.

“There will be a fundamental review of the competitions as well as the structure that has existed over many years.”

Motsepe added: “In this review of the competitions in totality there will be a focus on ensuring the competitions of the future are the most exciting, the most popular and the ones that the viewers and the spectators find to be most attractive.”
