Mamelodi Sundowns have their work cut out for them if they are to retain their Caf Champions League title, after being drawn alongside Tunisian giants Esperance.
Masandawana were crowned the best team in Africa last season in dramatic fashion, initially being dismissed from both the Champions League and the Caf Confederation Cup. After being reinstated into the CCL following the disqualification of AS Vita, Pitso Mosimane’s men went on to become only the second South African outfit to have the honour of a star above their badge.
Ironically, the Chloorkop based-outfit have again been drawn alongside Vita (the Congolese outfit who re-instated them to a place in the Confederation Cup), after advancing on the away goals rule following their 2-2 draw.
Sundowns’ other opponents include two-time Champions League winners Esperance and Ethiopian Premier League winners Saint George.
The draw for the Caf Confederation Cup was also concluded with Platinum Stars being drawn in a group alongside CS Sfaxien, and SuperSport United being drawn alongside TP Mazembe.
The first round of group games is set for the second weekend in May.
Caf have also restructured the format of both tournaments, and as a result there will be four groups in this phase of competition.
