SuperSport United were forced to play out to a 1-1 draw with Club Africain in their first leg of the Caf Confederation Cup semi-final at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday, writes Dylan Appolis.
Eric Tinkler’s side made their way into the semi-final after playing out to a 2-2 draw with Zesco United, going through on the away goal rule.
Meanwhile, Club Africain booked their place in the final four after claiming a 2-1 aggregate victory over MC Alger on the 24 September.
The home side came out with intent in the opening exchanges and came close to breaking the deadlock in the third minute, but Bradley Grobler could not find the target.
Club Africain were then awarded a penalty in the 20th minute after Morgan Gould was adjudged to have handled in the box. Khalifa stepped up and made no mistake from the spot-kick.
SuperSport almost equalised six minutes later as Grobler produced a headed effort at goal, but his attempt flew over the target.
The Tunisian side went into the half time interval with a one-goal lead over SuperSport.
Tinkler’s side upped the tempo in the second half and came close to scoring when Renielwe Letsholonyane unleashed a powerful strike at goal, but he was ultimately denied by the Club Africain shot-stopper.
SuperSport had a golden opportunity to level matters in the 68th minute after Jeremy Brockie put his headed effort wide of the target from close range.
Thabo Mnyamane should’ve handed his side the lead in the 80th minute, but his effort was kept out by Club Africain goalkeeper, to keep his sides lead intact.
SuperSport were then awarded a penalty in the closing stages if the match. Mnyamane stepped up and made no mistake from the spot-kick to hand his side a draw against the Tunisian at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
