Tottenham Hotspur crashed out of the League Cup after losing 5-3 on penalties to Fulham following a 1-1 draw in the second round on Tuesday evening.
But the former Celtic manager paid the price at Craven Cottage for making nine changes to his starting lineup.
Postecoglou gave Manor Solomon a full debut, and Giovani Lo Celso and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg started even though there was talk about their futures.
Marco Silva, the manager of Fulham, was banned from the sidelines after getting his third yellow card of the season. He made six changes, but it was Tottenham’s subs who had trouble.
Micky van de Ven scored an own goal in the 19th minute when he turned Tom Cairney’s cross past keeper Fraser Forster. This gave Fulham the lead.
In the 56th minute, when Fulham was down to 10 players because of a strange thing that happened, Tottenham scored a goal to tie the game.
Kenny Tete’s boot was broken, so the Fulham defender had to run down the tunnel to the locker room to get a new one.
Moments later, from where Tete would have been defending, Ivan Perisic sent in a cross, and Richarlison headed it in from a sharp angle.
But Tottenham couldn’t find a winner, and Marek Rodak saved Davinson Sanchez’s penalty kick in the shootout before Tete, who now had boots on both feet, made the winning kick.
Tottenham hasn’t won a trophy since 2008, and that drought isn’t going to end this season because they are already out of one competition.
At Kenilworth Road, Luton beat Gillingham 3-2 to win for the first time this season.
After losing to Brighton and Chelsea in their first two Premier League games, Rob Edwards’ side got off the mark in their first home game since winning last season’s Championship play-off final.
Jacob Brown, Alfie Doughty and Cauley Woodrow scored for Luton, who are playing in the top-flight for the first time in 31 years.
