Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits the Reds are waiting to discover the full extent of Emre Can’s ankle injury sustained against Burton Albion on Tuesday.

The German midfielder went down midway through the second half of the Reds’ 5-0 victory in the EFL Cup without any contact from an opposing player and was replaced by Kevin Stewart, reports the Liverpool website.

Klopp insists that Can was feeling a bit of pain in his ankle and admits that no contact was made from the opposing side at the Pirelli Stadium:

‘He had a little pain in his ankle without any touch – I couldn’t see any contact. It was a long leg, then a little bit floppy and then he had pain,’ Klopp said.

However, the German manager insists that the injury is not a serious one but he remains concerned over the ankle as it was the same ankle that was giving the midfielder problems at the end of last season.

‘But it is not that serious. It’s not that big [of a] pain anymore, but it’s the ankle he had problems with at the end of last season, so he’s a little bit worried,’ he added.

‘Hopefully, it’s nothing too serious.’

The 49-year-old manager also fears that striker Divock Origi had picked up an injury towards the end of the match, revealing the Belgium striker was suffering from cramp.

Liverpool will now return to the Premier League when they travel to White Hart Lane to face Tottenham Hotspurs on Saturday.

Kick-off has been set for 13:30.
