Manchester City will continue their bid for a seventh English League Cup in 10 years when they face Premier League rivals Southampton in the quarter-final.
Liverpool was the current Cup holder, but City beat them 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday. This was the first time the two English football powerhouses played a real game since the World Cup.
Soon after, the Premier League champions were given a match at St. Mary’s against a struggling team in the same league the week of January 9.
Charlton fans can look forward to a trip to the “Theatre of Dreams” after their team beat Brighton in a penalty shootout and earned a place in the last eight. They will play Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Charlton is the only non-Premier League team left in the League Cup this season, and the fact that Manchester United is 57 places ahead of them in the league table shows how hard of a task they face.
In a match between teams from the Midlands, Wolves, who have won the League Cup twice, will play at home against four-time winners Nottingham Forest.
In the last quarter-final match, Newcastle, which is doing well in the Premier League, will host Leicester, which has won the League Cup three times.
All four ties will be played in the week commencing January 9.
