Liverpool and Chelsea have both secured their passage into the third round of the League Cup following victories over Burton Albion and Bristol Rovers.

Liverpool’s progress never looked in doubt as the Reds opened the scoring on the quarter-hour mark through Divock Origi following good play from Sadio Mane.

The Red grabbed their second just seven minutes later as Roberto Firmino netted into an empty net following a poor piece of goalkeeping.

Liverpool continued to dominate the game as they never once looked troubled defensively. The side grabbed their third goal just after the hour mark as Tom Naylor was unfortunate to knock the ball into his own net following a dangerous ball from James Milner.

The victory was wrapped up by a pair of rapid fire Daniel Sturridge goals as the England striker tapped in from close range before finishing in deadly fashion to ensure a 5-0 victory.

Chelsea enjoyed a somewhat less comfortable victory over Rovers in their tie. Having begun the game in dominant fashion and created numerous scoring chances, the Blues finally took the lead in the 29th minute through Michy Batshuayi.

The side doubled their advantage barely a minute later as the rarely utilised Victor Moses made no mistake from close range.

Rovers hit back with a goal from Peter Hartley has he headed in a set piece with just 35 minutes on the clock before Chelsea regained their two-goal cushion just before half-time to bring an end to a frenetic period of play. The scorer was Batshuayi with his second.

Rovers were far from finished however as a sloppy piece of play by Pedro Rodriguez gifted the side a penalty, which Ellis Harrison slotted into the next just three minutes after the restart.

Despite a nervy end to the game, Chelsea ultimately held on to their goal advantage to advance.

Elsewhere, it proved a good night for Premier League clubs in general as the likes of Crystal Palace, Stoke City, Hull City, Swansea City and Everton all recorded wins.
