Erik ten Hag urged Manchester United to use their League Cup triumph against Newcastle as a springboard for sustained success this season.

United won their first major trophy in six years with a 2-0 win at Wembley. Casemiro scored with a header, and Sven Botman scored an own goal.

When Ten Hag came to United from Ajax last year, the club was in a lot of trouble. But in his first year as manager, he turned things around.

The Dutch coach has led United to third place in the Premier League. They are still in the running for the FA Cup and Europa League, which would be their second and third trophies of his tenure.

Ten Hag’s influence was clear in the way United played against a Newcastle team that was desperate to win its first trophy in 54 years.

But the tough Ten Hag doesn’t want his players to rest on their laurels.

“Silverware shows something, that you are on a good pathway. It is one cup and it is February but it shows we are in the right direction,” Ten Hag said.

“We have to continue on this pathway and not be satisfied, because satisfaction leads to laziness and then you don’t win any trophies.”

Since Alex Ferguson’s last season in 2013, United hasn’t won the Premier League, and in the meantime, their rivals, Manchester City, have become the best team in England.

During the Ferguson era, winning the League Cup would not have been a big deal, but Ten Hag insisted that it was important to his Old Trafford revolution because it shows his players that they can do well if they follow his methods.

“This moment you have to celebrate. It is not a common day. We won a trophy. This trophy means something. That is the feeling I get,” Ten Hag said.

“It will help, it will bring even more confidence as long as we don’t go over the top.

“We can give even more, to be better and to be more of a collective. Don’t be satisfied.”
