Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says he is looking to end the Gunners’ hoodoo when they travel to struggling side Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
At the top of the table, Arteta’s team is eight points ahead of Manchester City. On Saturday, Pep Guardiola’s team plays Southampton, which is at the bottom of the table.
Since Arteta helped the Gunners win 2-0 at Anfield in 2012, they haven’t won a league game there.
Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool has won the last six league games between the two teams that took place at home by a total of 22-4.
But Liverpool is stuck in eighth place, 29 points behind the Gunners, and the Gunners have already won at Tottenham, where it took them a long time to do so.
“We have to enjoy it,” Arteta said at his pre-match press conference. “We really need to embrace the moment and go for it.
“The team is really full of enthusiasm and positivity and we know we have a big challenge but a big opportunity to go to Anfield and do something we haven’t done for many years. That is what is driving the team in the last few days.
“We know what we have to do. We’ve played in the toughest places.”
Gabriel Jesus’s two goals in last week’s 4-1 win over Leeds, which was his first start in the league since November, have given Arteta more options up front.
Bukayo Saka is likely to play again after missing the game because he was sick. This means that only two of Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard, who are all in good shape, are likely to start.
“It’s much better to have that problem because at the moment they are all looking really good,” added Arteta.
“It depends on the moment, what we want to do, the quality we are seeking and the relationships that we want on certain days.
“Then obviously you can make five changes (during the game), so you have the ability to change the game with those players, which is great for us.”
