Chelsea got off to a bright start and opened the scoring in the fifth minute, when Cesc Fàbregas latched on to a low cross from Eden Hazard before guiding the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Palace then levelled matters four minutes later when Wilfried Zaha collected a low pass at the edge of the box and somehow managed to squeeze his effort between Alonso’s legs and into the bottom corner.
However, two minutes later and the Eagles took the lead when Christian Benteke broke through the middle of Chelsea’s backline, before playing a one-two with Zaha, collecting the ball again before lifting the ball over Courtois with a neat chip.
The Blues looked able to respond to the two quick goals conceded when Hazard collected the ball at the edge of the box, before unleashing a strike at goal, but he sliced his effort well wide of the post.
Antonio Conte’s side came close to levelling matters in the 23rd minute when Hazard twisted and turned his way past three Palace defenders before sending a low cross into the box. Costa latched on to the ball and struck a low volley towards goal, but Wayne Hennessey reacted brilliantly to deny the striker.
Palace had another opening at goal on the break when Cabaye set up Puncheon, who took a shot at goal from 25 yards out. He got decent contact on the ball, but sent his effort just wide of the target.
Chelsea came close to scoring in the 38th minute when Marcos Alonso collected the ball on the left before drilling his effort across the face of goal, but Hennessey got a touch on the ball before Palace made the clearance.
Palace had the chance to double their lead when Townsend whipped a cross to the back post to Tomkins, who peeled off his man for a free header at goal, but he could only lift his effort over the bar.
The Blues once again came close to scoring when Gary Cahill looped a header up into the six-yard box and David Luiz went up to head the ball at goal, but he could not generate enough power on the ball to beat Hennessey.
Crystal Palace went into the half-time interval with a 2-1 lead over Chelsea.
The Blues picked up where they left off in the first half when Pedro sent a pinpoint cross into the box for Costa. The striker had time and opted against the header to bring the ball down to his chest. He attempted to fire at goal, but Dann got in his way to put him off the strike.
Palace had a chance of their own in the 62nd minute when Zaha came within inches of doubling his tally for the afternoon as he latched on to Puncheon’s pass before firing towards the bottom corner, but Courtois was on hand to deny the forward.
The Eagles came close in the 68th minute when Cabaye curled his effort across the face of goal and Milivojevic made a run over the ball, but it travelled just past the post.
Costa had a golden opportunity to draw Chelsea level when he latched on to a cross from Hazard before producing a headed effort at goal, but guided his effort wide of the post from close range in the 76th minute of the match.
However, Crystal Palace held on to a narrow 2-1 victory over leaders Chelsea to secure all three points.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor through goals by Eric Dier and Heung-Min Son to walk away with all three points.

A goal by Miguel Britos inspired Watford to clinch a narrow 1-0 victory over Sunderland at the Vicarage Road Stadium to secure all three points.
