Chelsea suffered their fifth successive defeat under Frank Lampard following their 2-0 defeat to London rivals Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.
Graham Potter was fired, and Lampard took over as manager of Chelsea until the end of the season. His troubled team was booed off the field at the end of the game, though.
With Mauricio Pochettino, the former manager of Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham, rumoured to be close to taking over, Chelsea are having their worst season since 1993. They haven’t won in eight games.
Cesar Azpilicueta’s own goal in the 37th minute and Bryan Mbeumo’s goal in the 78th minute put 11th-placed Chelsea in danger of finishing in the bottom half of the table for the first time since 1996.
“The fans feel down because they are used to success. We have to take it on the chin,” Lampard said.
