SoccerClub selects the Premier League Team of the Week as Vincent Kompany and Kevin De Bruyne shine for Manchester City and Cesc Fabregas sets new Premier League record.
Formation: 4-4-2
GK: Fraser Forster (Southampton)
The English stopper was in fine form as he helped his team to a 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Anfield. Forster proved to be Southampton’s hero as his man of the match performance, which included a penalty save, saw the Saints record their fourth consecutive clean sheet against Liverpool this season.
Right-back: Billy Jones (Sunderland)
With the pressure off Sunderland after their relegation last week, David Moyes’s men put in a performance which surprised many as they beat Hull City 2-0 at the KCOM stadium. Billy Jones put in a standout performance as the Englishman not only helped his side keep a rare clean sheet but he also scored the opening goal as he redirected John O’Shea’s header into the back of the Hull net. Unfortunately for Sunderland, this performance came too late as they now prepare for life in the Championship.
Centre-back: Vincent Kompany (Manchester City)
After being described by manager Pep Guardiola as a ‘proper centre-back’ following his standout performance last week, the Manchester City skipper reproduced his fine form with another quality display. Not only did the Belgian international marshal his defence perfectly to guide them to another clean sheet but he also got his name on the scoresheet again. Guardiola will be hoping that Kompany’s injury problems are behind him and that his skipper will be fit and firing at the start of next season.
Centre-back: Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal)
The Frenchman put in a real captain’s performance as he helped guide his side to a moral boosting 2-0 win over Manchester United. Koscielny dealt brilliantly with the pace and threat provided by the United attackers to ensure his side kept a clean sheet and provided Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal fans with a victory to savour in an otherwise disappointing season.
Left-back: Marcos Alonso (Chelsea)
Many people were shocked by Antonio Conte’s decision to bring in Marcos Alonso to Chelsea, with the defender having had a rather underwhelming first stint in England with Sunderland. Alonso, however has proven his worth time and time again this season and put in yet another quality display for his side this past game week against Middlesbrough. Alonso proved a constant threat down Chelsea’s left-hand side as he got his name on the score sheet and provided Chelsea with width and pace as the Blues carved Boro apart, relegating them in the process and edging ever closer to the Premier League crown.
Right-midfield: Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City)
Last year’s PFA player of the year has failed to replicate with consistency the form which won him the award last year and helped the Foxes to a historic league title. The Algerian, however showed his potential with an impressive display against Watford to help his side to a comfortable 3-0 victory. Mahrez was a constant thorn in the side of the Watford defence and he got his goal, which was Leicester’s second, on 58 minutes with a cool finish. Mahrez will be hoping to reproduce this type of form and carry it into next season.
Centre-midfield: Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea)
The former Arsenal and Barcelona man became the first player to record 10 or more assists in 6 different seasons on Monday night against Middlesbrough. The Spaniard dictated play from the middle of the park as his two assists propelled him into the Premier League record books. Although Fabregas has not been a regular starter this season, his performance was a timely reminder to his manager as to just how influential he can be.
Centre-midfield: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)
The Belgian international was arguably this game weeks stand out player as his goal and two assists helped City romp home to an emphatic 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace. The former Chelsea man scored City’s second goal of the game with a perfectly placed shot into the bottom corner before providing the assists for the third and fifth goals of the game.
Left-midfield: Manual Lanzini (West Ham)
The Argentine midfielder dealt what could be the knock-out blow in Tottenham Hotspurs title challenge as his goal was the difference between the Hammers and Spurs in their Friday night clash. Lanzini was mercurial for West Ham causing the visitors loads of problems before finally finding the back of the net with a clinical finish past Hugo Lloris, which saw his sidewalk away 1-0 winners.
Striker: Sam Vokes (Burnley)
The Welsh striker was the star performer for Burnley this weekend as his two goals secured a point in a tight 2-2 draw against West Brom. The former Wolves man opened the scoring for Sean Dyce’s men before two West Brom goals looked to be condemning Burnley to a rare home loss. Vokes, however had other ideas as he popped up late on to score a vital equaliser which all but secures Burnley’s safety.
Striker: Fernando Llorente (Swansea)
Having scored many vital goals for Swansea this season, Llorente did it again as he grabbed the only goal in the Swans 1-0 victory over Everton. The goal could prove pivotal as it took his side out of the relegation zone and one point ahead relegation rivals Hull City.
