Manchester City paid the price for not adding a second goal as Martin de Roon scored an injury time goal to earn Middlesbrough the draw at the Etihad.
Sergio Aguero’s lone strike was not enough to secure three points against a spirited Middlesbrough side, who were rewarded for their good defensive display against the league leaders in dramatic fashion.
The home side completely dominated proceedings in the first half with the visitors unable to muster a single attack as some Kevin de Bruyne magic allowed his Argentine international teammate to open the scoring. City led 1-0 at the break as Middlesbrough came out firing in the second 45 obviously with their manager’s words still ringing in their ears.
Aguero squandered a glorious chance to put his side out of sight but failed to hit the target after being played in by Jesus Navas. A goalkeeping blunder allowed De Bruyne the chance to get his name on the scoresheet as his first-time volley sailed over the bar.
Step up De Roon as he ghosted in at the far post to head his side to a point in the first minute of time added on. Gael Clichy will have to explain to Pep Guardiola his reasons for failing to head the ball away from danger and for not spotting De Roon’s run at the far post.
The draw allows Chelsea the chance to go top if they beat Everton in the day’s late game.
Elsewhere, Sunderland earned their first win of the season despite Steven Pienaar being dismissed as the Black Cats beat Bournemouth 2-1 on the road. Crystal Palace came from two goals down at Burnley before conceding late to Ashley Barnes to go down 3-2. West Ham’s dreadful run continud as Bojan earned Stoke a point in London as both team’s failed to find a second and the winner.
