Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte strongly believes that striker Harry Kane will break every goalscoring record by the time he retires.
The 29-year-old England captain scored two goals in Spurs’ 4-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace on Wednesday. He only needs three more goals to become the club’s all-time top scorer.
Kane now has 264 goals, which is two less than the late Jimmy Greaves. He has scored 15 goals in the Premier League this season.
Kane has scored 198 goals in the Premier League. Only Alan Shearer (260 goals) and Wayne Rooney (208) have scored more.
“I think to speak about Harry, I think a bit that we waste time to explain about the type of player that he is,” said Conte after Spurs’ first victory since the Premier League resumed following the World Cup break.
“I repeat, we are talking about a really world-class striker and he’s going to beat every record with the goals.”
Conte says that he thinks Kane will reach new heights because he is a strong person.
Kane has had to get back on his feet after missing a penalty in England’s 2-1 loss to France in the World Cup quarterfinals. If he had scored, he would have scored the most goals in England’s history.
The first penalty kick he took was perfect, and he hit it past Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris to tie Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals.
“For us he’s an important point of reference, not only for the goal but also on the pitch and with Hugo (Lloris) our captain,” said Conte.
“Especially in the difficult moments, Harry, you know that he is ready to fight, ready to help the teammates, ready to solve the situation with a goal, with an assist.
“To continue this way, to face every situation positive or negative, always with a great spirit, great character, to overcome the difficulty I think in this period and also before the start of the World Cup.”
After winning, Tottenham is only two points behind fourth-place Manchester United, but United has a game in hand.
This weekend, when Tottenham plays Portsmouth at home in the third round of the FA Cup, Kane could possibly break a Spurs record.
But Conte might want to give him a break because the club’s next league game is next Sunday at home against Arsenal, a rival team from north London that is currently at the top of the table.
